I can’t remember the last time Simple Minds toured the U.S. I know it’s been a good long while. But with all the ’80s revival shows (like the Richard Blade hosted “80s Night” affairs), as well as those bands who continue to remain prolific (think Depeche Mode, New, Order, OMD), it’s surprising to think the biggest Scottish band from the ’80s has been largely absent.
Well, that all looks to be changing. The band, who will always be known for that “Breakfast Club” single, “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” finally returned stateside a few weeks back to play the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. Again, my apologies for another late posting of a live show in L.A., as other events have taken precedence. But this one’s worth the wait.
Frontman Jim Kerr, who’s clearly excited to be onstage again, hasn’t let age slow him down. He’s still got his new romantic dance moves going on. His voice is in tip-top condition. And although he and guitarist Charlie Burchill are the only remaining founding members, this show was definitely an ideal way to experience Simple Minds, whether you’re a long-time fan, or new to the party.
Most of the old hits were on display, as well as a few new ones from their latest 2018 album “Walk Between Worlds.” The show was flashy, the band was tight, and the nostalgia felt very contemporary. And kudos to drummer Cherisse Osei and vocalist Sarah Brown, who’s youthful energy and enthusiasm helped usher in the band’s fourth decade.
