Here’s another track that I heard in between sets at last Sunday’s Clan of Xymox show at the Echoplex. So-Cal based Drab Majesty’s been gaining ground around the L.A. coldwave club circuit for the last few years. Primarily the project of Deb Demure, an alter-ego invented by artist Andrew Clinco, with support from keyboardist Mona D (a.k.a. Alex Nicolau), Drab Majesty encapsulates the ’80s new wave aesthetic with contemporary coldwave melancholia.
“39 by Design” is a more downtempo affair, deliberately driven by synth-based percussive rhythms, chilled guitar melodies, and spatially deep vocals. Lyrically, it’s a bit on the moodier and darker side of the spectrum, as the genre tends to lean. But don’t let that stop you. This is immensely listenable stuff, firmly embracing the coldwave spirit, while striving to capture the beauty in the shadows.
