I meant to catch these guys at Desert Daze last month. But the Day 1 Friday night lightning storm put an end to that plan, cancelling their performance, as well as many others.
Earlier today, the A.I. autobots behind Spotify’s recommendations reminded me of Wand, suggesting their sublimely psychedelic track “Melted Rope.” Admittedly, I don’t know a great deal about these L.A. natives. But I hear they have ties to Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, and White Fence. That makes a bit of sense.
“Melted Rope” comes from their second album “Golem,” and it’s a strange bit of contemporary neo-retro psychedelia, glazed-over with vintage lo-fi rhythm and sun-baked atmosphere, as well as a bit of kaleidoscopic grime in the stoned vocal stylings of frontman Corey Hanson.
Again, I would’ve loved to have seen them live at Desert Daze. But since they’re SoCal natives, I’m sure they’ll be around again. Until then, check out “Melted Rope.”
