Chapterhouse’s immensely listenable “Pearl” goes all the way back to 1991, when a number of British indie bands embraced the wall of sound genre known today as shoegazing.
This one’s a bit of a blissful oddity. It contains all the aural ingredients … shimmering guitars, intensely focused feedback, and ethereal vocals (from guest artist Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, no less). But “Pearl” also embraced what counted for synths and sequenced drum patterns back then. Not a radical idea. But unique for the genre … with the exception of, maybe, Curve ,,, but more on that in a later post.
