Gary Numan @ the Fonda on 10.06.18

I’ve been meaning to post this one all week.  But time has a way of shuffling priorities.  So finally, today is for Gary Numan.

Numan’s essentially an ’80s legend and pioneer, responsible for influencing numerous artists (NIN’s Trent Reznor , Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, and Marilyn Manson) with his synth-based electronic recordings.  He also helped define the new wave movement of the era, with now-classic singles like “Cars” and “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?”

That brings us to today’s Numan, who performed last weekend at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood to conclude the U.S. leg of his “Savage” tour.  Here’s an artist who’s absorbed the musical stylings of those he’s influenced and made them his own.  This is a heavier, darker, more industrial rock sound.  The synth-heavy bits are there, but they’re now complemented by a harder driving edge.  And it works brilliantly.

Here’s a selection of tracks Numan performed at the Fonda that demonstrate the breadth of his career.  Some old. Some new. All worth checking out.
